Origins of AROPS
The Association of Representatives of Old Boys' Societies was started by M.E.C. Comer (Old Johnian Society) at an inaugural meeting in December 1971. Its objectives were simple: "to provide a forum for the exchange of views and experience between representatives of Old Boys' Societies". Within this ample framework the Association has progressed in breadth both of discussion and membership. This latter was originally planned with HMC schools in mind. In 1978 the title was altered to its present form to bring girls' and co-ed schools into the fold. More recently societies from preparatory schools have joined. Today more than 260 schools are represented. In 1996 a magnificent dinner was held at the House of Lords to celebrate 25 years of AROPS. |
